21 is the Lucky Number at WSOP

A pair of nines trumps a suited queen-jack.
By Brett C | Nov 11, 2009

He is only 21-years old and already a millionaire. His name is Joe Cada, from Shelby Township Michigan. And after turning pro in poker, he's never looked back and now most likely never will.

$8.55 million jackpot
That he was holding a pair of nines wasn't all that impressive. The fact that his opponent - Darvin Moon - had called his all-in bet with a suited queen-jack combo, proved telling.

The board held two sevens, a king, an eight and a deuce. Sadly this was of little help to either player. But it was the tipping point spurring Cada to an emphatic victory because it gave him the two pairs.

Advantage ebbed and flowed
Neither player appeared to be a position of command as the WSOP. Rather it was a series of maneuvers which saw both Moon and Cada gaining the ascendancy and relinquishing it at various points along the way.

Joe Cada has now broking the record for the WSOP's youngest winner which was set last year by the Dane - Peter Eastgate. Cada is 340 days younger than the latter.

Darvin Moon wiped out Cada's lead within 12 hands, as he revealed a pair of queens during a showdown to rake in a pot worth millions of chips. At that point Cada - who lost the pot - shook his head in frustration as he walked away from the table.

The tension ratcheted up a notch when Cada was up by less than 4 million chips after 52 hands, with almost 195 million chips in play. Moon wasted no time in turning up the heat to the tune of a 100 million chips.

But things were slowly turning in Cada's favour. When two 10s, a 9 and a 5 were on the board, Cada was teetering. But he called the bet and flipped over a 9 for a pair. The rest they say - is history as Moon failed to produce on the river. For his efforts and second place, Moon won a whopping $5.18 million.
