National Lottery Tops Online Casinos

UK punters shy away from online gambling in favor of the National Lottery.
By Karen D | Nov 23, 2010

The latest results of the quarterly Gambling Participation survey conducted by the UK Gambling Commission have been released. It has again been shown that UK bettors favor the National Lottery over online gambling.

A total of 7,000 people participated in the survey and more than half (54.3 percent to be exact) gambled. Of this group, only 10.5 per cent gambled online meaning that there has been no increase in the number of players placing bets remotely since 2009. This figure was 9.7 percent in 2008, 8.8 percent in 2007 and 7.2 percent in 2006.

Additionally, it was found that more men than women gambled and the most likely age group to gamble was 15 to 34 year olds.

The surveys were carried by ICM Research which is a member of the British Polling Council and included a national representative sample, taking into account age, gender, region and social classification. Surveys were conducted over the phone.

One of the purposes of the research is to estimate the prevalence of problem gambling, to discover what motivates people to gamble and to help develop policy for the regulation of gambling.
